Mom and I returned late on Sunday night/Monday morning from a long weekend of driving and horses.

Breyerfest2005 stories )

One of the more interesting things we saw was the KY Horse Park drill team which is comprised of inner-city youths at risk. It is supported by a lot of foundations and businesses (clothes, tack, feed, grooming equiptment etc.) and these youths learn to care for the horses (all BLM mustangs) and ride with the best of them on the 10 horse drill team. These kids go from being afraid when the horse snorts to handling it well when a horse messes up in the pattern. They learn confidence, self-esteem, self-control, and (esp. in KY) some marketable skills instead of being on the streets.

But we had some good visits, saw some VERY nice horses, saw some very nice demos, played canasta and had a good time. The weather was perfect (mid-eighties and not too humid). The drive home was gorgeous (there was fog in the valleys but not on the road so it was like being on an airplane and was still doing that at sunset. We got spit on by the rain but nothing bad and we got to see a gorgeous sunset.
