There are no spoilers in this update.

Thursday
Went to see The Pirates of Penzance by the Washington Savoyards. The singing was fabulous. The staging was cute but sometimes went a bit far, the characterizations were a bit off in a few places (the daughters), the Modern Major General wasn't as fast as some I have seen. The costumes were brilliant, some of the staging was brilliant, the choreography was very nice. My main complaint was the soundperson didn't set the levels properly before the show and there were echos (and a hint of feedback) on the first 2 numbers. The drive there was and adventure (do NOT trust GoogleMaps in DC) but we saw lots of pretty buildings and plants.

Friday
Went to the MdAIR (Maryland Association for Institutional Research) spring institute. Learned that I really need to read my email before leaving (I didn't know which building the thing was in). Eventually found it (help via phone calls ... thank goodness for the phone-card). Went to 2 very good and interesting sessions and I don't think I will EVER hear the story about the emperor wearing no clothes the same way again. Giggle

Saturday
Judged at Maryland History Fair all morning. When I was talking to Java about it later, he thought I had been doing Nationals (which aren't until June) because of the creativity and complexity of the topics. I was doing Documentaries (aka Media) this round and I swear that some of these belong on PBS. I mean WOW. Yes, I know that the new editing stuff on the computers makes things a lot easier than 5 or 10 years ago, but it still takes a lot of work to plan it out, splice the bits and come in on topic, under the time line, and keep it interesting, educational, stand-alone, accurate, etc. WOW

I then WentBarn and visited Echo, made her clean and less itchy. I also started working with her in her stall since the barn is getting busy enough that I may not always be able to have a set of cross-ties available, she may end up being groomed in her stall while tied. So, I worked on the concept of being tied in the stall (not hard tied just training) while grooming her. She was confused and not real happy but was a GoodGirl anyway. She liked most of the grooming and LOVES the fact that when she is in the stall when I groom her, I can do her face 'properly'. I also visited Alvin and Jacob and Legs with stale cheerios to their approval (until they stopped appearing).

Then headed south to meet a friend of mine whom I haven't seen to much of recently due to weird schedules. We had dinner at a Chinese restaurant and spent a lot of time making each other laugh and/or roll the eyes (I wish I could remember what he said that I wanted to quote him on). Then we went to see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I thought the opening sequence was beautiful. The humor was quite nice and I am SO waiting to see the Cinefex article on it.

Sunday
Spent most of the day working around the house. A lot of stuff got done (garden, pony room, bedroom, sitting room, shopping, etc.).

Does anyone have a safe for other plants way to erradicate the ($*%&(*$&^%W# blackberry plants from my garden? At the end of the day, we got pizza for dinner and played WoW for a couple of hours.

All in all a pretty good though insanely busy weekend. This week will involve laundry, dance, visit with a couple of friends (hi QM, I should be able to meet you Thursday as long as B from FL doesn't want that date), GoBarn (and hopefully ride), lots of gardening (at our place or my sister's), time with Java's family, and maybe some more WoW.

New topics that I saw at the Fair (as opposed to those that overlapped the previous extensive list)

Massacre in Boston (who shouted fire?)
Time
B&O Railroad
Hine's photography
Civil War reenactors
African influence on Blues/Jazz
Velvet Underground
Hitler's propaganda
Silence as a form of communication

Since I was judging documentaries, I saw fewer projects than I would if I were doing exhibits. I will read the book I got listing all the projects after the Nationals and post some from that as well as some from the nationals and these lists for a comprehensive list of interesting topics.

Oh, it is really nice when for the run-offs the judges are in complete accord for the rankings.
