The movie rocks. The characters are fabulous, I love the voice actors.
The earliest teasers for this movie looked a bit uninspiring (aside from the "from Pixar Animation Studios" which to me gets translated into "I WANT TO SEE THIS". Pixar is fabulous, I have yet to see a full-length movie they have done that I thought was bad. I love their shorts (and HOPE that Disney eventually releases the collection on DVD ... some of Lasseter's college work could be included as well as clips of other things they have done. They did announce the next Pixar movie (Summer 2007 Ratatouille).
The short for this movie is "One Man Band" that has (like most of the shorts) no dialog but as we have come to expect from Pixar is exquisite in is execution. The story has several twists and turns and the final actions of the child are priceless.
Later trailers looked pretty good but possibly gave away too much of the movie. Well, they didn't. There is a LOT of sub-plots that the trailers I saw had nothing of in them. The animation is amazing. As Lightning is driving with Sally through the country the trees, rocks, and water are breathtakingly beautiful. The amount of details that are including is amazing. Then you get the huge number of small gags/references that are incorporated. Bobble-head cars, car flys, nods to other Pixar projects (Monster's Inc, Toy Story, Bugs Life, Knick Knack), Jeopardy, etc. I didn't see the ball (or a Luxo Lamp) but I am sure they were there somewhere.
The personalities of the cars and how they interact with each other and express themselves in facial expressions while still looking like the cars they are is fabulous. The appropriateness of the punishment is refreshing and I loved the pit-crew scenes in the big race.
I really like the depth of Doc's character and motivations. I want to see the film again to appreciate it even more.
The closing credits have a dedication to someone who I think may have been the lead animator for certain Pixar characters that is very well done. They also acknowledge a lot of places that are similar to Radiator Springs.
Go, see, buy, enjoy. I know I will
